British hope to holiday in Europe by end of July
Holidays in Europe could be back on the table for British families by the end of next month, according to reports in the national UK press
The news comes after scientists found no evidence of variants in more than 23,000 people tested after returning to the UK from countries classed as amber destinations.
According to The Telegraph, fewer than one in 200 travellers from amber list countries tested positive for Covid-19 and ‘there were no cases classed as being variants of concern’.
Vaccination and testing resulting in safer international travel
And according to another report in The Times, Sir Graham Brady, Chairman of the 1922 committee of Conservative MPs, said: “Vaccination and testing are making international travel safer just as surely as they make things safer within our borders. “It’s time British people were able to reap the benefits of the vaccines and for us to get the travel industry moving again.”
The UK government’s traffic light system will be reviewed on 28 June and many in the travel industry will be waiting with baited breath, as they have accused those in charge of being overly cautious in their approach.
“Our approach to international travel simply defies belief, as Europe reopens, we have gone from a restart based on data and science to the near total closure of our airports without proper explanation or justification,” Henry Smith MP, chair of the All-Party Future of Aviation Group, said.
But it’s not just the Brits who are facing restrictions on their travel this summer. Asian residents aren’t making long-haul travel plans because of compulsory quarantine on their return home that is also often costly, despite the fact that travel restrictions themselves have been eased.
Those lucky enough to travel should check that they are fully covered. Less than one in 100 travel insurers provide complete cover, according to a report by consumer champions Which?
